SAW Regional Events
The Staunton, Augusta County, Waynesboro region (SAW) includes three senior centers: Churchville, Staunton, and Waynesboro. The three centers get together periodically for special events hosted by one of the locations. These are normally bigger events with more going on than a usual Center day of activities. Sometimes we have a holiday theme like Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day, Mardi Gras or Fourth of July and sometimes we have an educational theme, such as Keys to Brain Fitness.
We have several dedicated volunteers who lead craft projects several times a month. Sometimes those crafts are “take-home” crafts and sometimes are created for the purpose of selling to the public at various events.
Brenda Bruce has led numerous sewing projects including lap quilts, wall hangings, pillowcases and holiday ornaments.
Members have shown interest in updating the Center’s scrapbook and learning the different techniques to make interesting pages. This is an ongoing project that will continue as long as good pictures are available.
Jewelry making is another art, or craft, that takes place at the Center for those who are able. We also sell jewelry made by local artists. Shop the Center anytime between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Prices range from $7.50 to $30, and these beautiful necklaces, bracelets and earrings make wonderful gifts throughout the year.
Another new favorite is creating ornaments for the seasonal tree in the Activity Room. A volunteer brings in new craft projects every few months. Members work on the ornaments and change decorations for each holiday and season: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Spring/Easter, Summer, July Fourth and Fall.
- When: Tuesday; 1-4 p.m.
- Where: SSC Front Room
- Description: Party Bridge for folks who love the game. Our Bridge players are very open to having new members join them. This includes people who are new to playing bridge, or who haven’t played for many years and need a refresher. Almost all of our current bridge players were in one of those two situations when they joined the group themselves. Call Lori at 886-4634 by Monday at 3 p.m. for your spot at the table.
Rummikub, Dominoes & More
- When: Monday – Friday; 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
- Where: SSC Front Room
- Description: Pick-up games happen any time, any day. There’s always room for one more player! Rummikub is much like the famous card game only it’s played with “tiles” instead of cards. Dominoes is a favorite with three to six players throughout the day. Also available is a full game shelf with Rook, Triaminos, Clue, trivia games and more.
The Center has wonderful support from many talented groups and individuals in the area that are willing to volunteer their time to provide entertaining programs. Usually there are one or two programs throughout the month including locals like Garold Sanger and Jeff Lasher playing upbeat country gospel, Carol McAlister’s piano sing-a-long and storytellers Mack & Joan Smith.
On May 11, 2011, the Center hosted the Bridgewater College Jazz Ensemble for a rousing benefit jazz concert in the ShenanArts’ Ntelos Theater. Members have also attended afternoon shows at ShenanArts.
Please check the current monthly calendar for details of upcoming shows.
